Black History Convocation
As the original Beta Alpha Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, we have started off our spring semester with efforts of being a “service to all mankind.” The chapter volunteered at the Kearney Center where we helped to prep food and clean the kitchen. Volunteers served nearly 200 people, while getting to know residents of the shelter on a personal level. Our state’s annual AKA Day at the Capitol was held February 3rd - 4th. Members of the sorority discussed the state of “Black Florida” and how many African-Americans are affected by social injusitce.
Coming up, the chapter plans create a “Quilt for Kollege”. The quilt will spotlight various service and fraternal organizations on campus and will be presented to the students at FAMU DRS. It is our hope that this quilt will encourage more students to attend HBCUs and will show them the importance of obtaining a higher education.
Lastly, the chapter is thrilled to announce the return of the Miss Young, Gifted, and Black Scholarship pageant. The pageant is open to freshman girls who would like to showcase how they exude black excellence. The pageant interest meeting will take place Tuesday, February 16th, at 6:00 pm in B. L. Perry, room 300.
